Indigenous Knowledge Bill in the Pipeline

The department of science and technology says the legislation to protect indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) is on its way to parliament.

A spokesperson for the department told the parliamentary committee involved that the draft IKS bill had been approved by the department.  A submission to the minister of science and technology, for approval for further consultation with other government departments, was now in process.

Comment Sought on World Heritage Site Guidelines

Environmental affairs minister Edna Molewa has published guidelines for preparing to nominate a South African world heritage site with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The minister says while the country has been very successful with its world heritage submissions, there have been challenges concerning the conservation and effective management of the potential sites.

Regulations on Broadband Infrastructure on the Cards

Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services

Telecommunications and postal services minister Siyabonga Cwele wants the Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) to regulate broadband infrastructure and facility sharing.

The minister said in the debate on his budget vote the duplication of public and private infrastructure posed a challenge as it contributed to high deployment costs that is ultimately passed on to consumers.
