Regulations on Broadband Infrastructure on the Cards

Telecommunications and postal services minister Siyabonga Cwele wants the Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) to regulate broadband infrastructure and facility sharing.

The minister said in the debate on his budget vote the duplication of public and private infrastructure posed a challenge as it contributed to high deployment costs that is ultimately passed on to consumers.

Research Infrastructure Roadmap Released

Reports on South Africa’s Research Infrastructure Roadmap and a National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System have been approved and released.

The science and technology department, in a statement, declares that it commissioned the two reports to help it map South Africa’s future research infrastructure.

Germany Withdraws From SKA

Germany announced last week that it will leave the Square Kilometre Array Organisation (SKAO) at the end of June 2015.

Difficult national financial circumstances around the funding of large research infrastructures in Germany and Europe were cited as the reasons for the withdrawal.
