Background: 

Before being appointed as deputy minister of rural development and land reform in November 2010, Thulas Thembelani Nxesi was secretary general of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu). He has served in this position since 1995, prior to which he was assistant general secretary for five years. Nxesi’s career as a trade unionist began in 1985 with the National Education Union of South Africa (NEUSA). He later headed the unity talks culminating in the formation of Sadtu. In 2004, Nxesi was elected president of Education International. He holds a BA from Fort Hare University and a B Ed from the University of the Witwatersrand.
