President Zuma has proclaimed new salary levels for magistrates, judges and constitutional court judges in the Government Gazette.

The latest salaries are published in terms of the Magistrates Act of 1993 and the Judges’ Remuneration and Conditions of Employment Act of 2001.

In terms of magistrates, the notice provides a breakdown of the total remuneration.

Pay includes:

•    Basic salary equal to 60% of total package
•    Pension benefit contribution to the applicable pension fund
•    A flexible portion for the remaining amount of total package

Special grade chief magistrates are to now get just over one million rand per annum while a magistrate will receive R671 219 a year.

As regards judges, the total remuneration package includes:

•    A cash annual salary component of 72.24%
•    A non-cash component of 27.76%-(including car allowance and medical aid contributions)

The chief justice will now receive R 2 237 308 per annum while a constitutional court judge will earn R 1 789 873 a year.

Judges sitting in the high and labour courts are to receive approximately one and a half million rand per annum.

All the salaries were increased by 5%.

Both sets of salary increases apply from 1 April 2011.
