Geoffrey Quinton Mitchell Doidge was born on 26 April 1954. He matriculated from Mt. Currie Senior Secondary School in 1972, after which he became a vehicle salesman. For the next twenty years he was employed as such and chaired various community forums and councils in Kokstad.

Mr Doidge was active in the ANC as chairman of the Kokstad Branch and member of the Transkei Regional Executibe between 1991 and 1994. He became a member of Parliament in 1994 and was elected as Whip. He served on various parliamentary committees before he took over as minister of public works in September 2008, a post which he held until 2010.
