Background: 

Derek Andre Hanekom has served as deputy minister of science and technology since April 2004 until October 2012, when he took over the position as minister of the same department. A member of parliament in the National Assembly since 1994, he was minister of agriculture and land affairs until 1999. A full-time commercial farmer between 1978 and 1983, Hanekom was imprisoned for political activities and released in 1986. He then went into exile in Zimbabwe, where he served as coordinator of the Popular History Trust until his return to South Africa in 1990. Between 1990 and 1994, Hanekom was coordinator responsible for policy and development on the ANC’s land and agriculture desk, as well as ANC spokesman on agricultural matters. He has been a member of the ANC national executive committee since 1994. Although Hanekom has read widely on economics, land and agricultural policy, he has no formal academic qualifications.
