Appointed minister of justice and constitutional development in May 2009, Thamsanqa Justice Radebe served as minister of public works from 1994 to 1999; minister of public enterprises between 1999 and 2004; and minister of transport from 2004 until 2009. He holds and LLM in international law from the University of Leipzig, having begun his legal studies at the University of Zululand. As a member of the ANC’s underground movement, Radebe went into exile shortly after completing his articles at a Durban law firm. Having served the ANC in Tanzania and Zambia, Radebe was involved in organising ANC and South African Communist Party (SACP) underground cells in South Africa from Lesotho, during which time he also received military training as a member of Umkhonto weSizwe. In 1986, Radebe was sentenced under the Terrorism Act to ten years’ imprisonment on Robben Island. He was released in 1990 and chaired the ANC’s regional committee for southern Natal until becoming a member of cabinet.
