Cabinet Approves Environmental Mandates


The country’s position on two environmental issues, to be discussed at international conferences in the following weeks, were approved by cabinet on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued after the session, South Africa’s negotiators at the meeting on the conservation of migratory species of wild animals, to be held in Quito, Ecuador from 4 to 9 November and at the conferences of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as well as the Kyoto Protocol, which will take place from 1 to 12 December in Lima, Peru, were given their mandates.

Nuclear Cooperation Agreement with China on the Cards

An intergovernmental framework agreement on nuclear cooperation will be signed with China in the first week of November 2014.

The energy department, in a statement, added that this would be followed by an agreement with Japan in the near future.

NERSA to be Informed of Pipeline EIAs

Petroleum pipeline licence holders will have to inform the National Energy Regulator in writing of any applications they make for an environmental impact assessment necessary before the licensed activity is brought to a halt.

This proposal is contained in draft amendment regulations to the Petroleum Pipelines Act published for comment in Government Gazette 38088.
