Department of Labour
The labour inspectors’ conference being held in Cape Town this week by the Department of Labour’s Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch will highlight the focus on its regulatory and enforcement initiatives.
The conference which begins tomorrow and runs until Friday will include an update on the recent amendments to labour laws, the state of compliance in the country, IES procedures and the implementation of sector accords.
The IES responds to the monitoring and enforcement of a range of labour legislation such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Equity Act and the Unemployment Insurance Act.
As part of its inspection process, between April 2013 and March 2014, the IES plans to conduct 130 000 workplace visits in identified high risk and problematic sectors.
The conference will also address the following issues:
• Shaping the future of IES.
• Inspectors’ perspective on transformation of labour market using employment equity as an instrument.
• Stakeholder’s perspective on labour inspection.
The conference will be addressed by speakers from the International Labour Organisation, the country’s labour federations, Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and chairpersons of parliamentary committees that deal with labour matters.
