COIDA Threshold on Maximum Earnings Increased

Pensions and earnings related to the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act have been adjusted.

The act provides for compensation for disablement caused by occupational injuries or diseases sustained or contracted by employees at work or for death resulting from such injuries or diseases.

The labour department published the revised amounts in Government Gazette 41382:

•    Notice 16: Maximum amount of earnings on which the assessment of an employer shall be calculated – an increase of the maximum amount of earnings to R430 944 per annum with effect from 1 March 2018;
•    Notice 17: Manner of calculating compensation including the nature and degree of disablement; nature of benefits; manner of calculating benefits; recommended maximum compensation; and the recommended minimum compensation – in effect from 1 April 2018; and
•    Notice 18: A 5.8% increase in monthly pensions payable with effect from 1 April 2018.

Meanwhile, the department has announced that briefings on the national minimum wage and amendments to labour legislation are set to resume this week.

The national minimum wage is scheduled to kick in on 1 May 2018.

Briefing sessions are planned for Klerksdorp (25 January), Rustenburg (26 January), Bloemfontein (01 February), Welkom (02 February), Umtata (07 February), East London (08 February), Port Elizabeth (09 February), Upington (15 February), and ending in Kimberley on 16 February.
