Minister of Human Settlements (2009-)
- Premier of Gauteng (1994-1998)
Premier of Gauteng province between 1994 and 1998, Mosima Gabriel “Tokyo” Sexwale was appointed minister of human settlements in May 2009 after a long absence from politics. During that time, he focused on his extensive business interests in the mining and energy sector. As a student at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland based in Swaziland, Sexwale joined the ANC underground movement and Umkhonto weSizwe (MK), leaving for the former Soviet Union in 1975 for political and military training. He was arrested in South Africa in 1977, convicted under the Terrorism Act and sentenced to eighteen years’ imprisonment on Robben Isaland where he continued studying for a B Com. Released thirteen years later, Sexwale was elected to the ANC’s provincial executive committee for what is now Gauteng and later served as its chairman.
