Proposed Changes to Voting Law

Proposed legislation designed to allow South Africans living abroad to vote in national elections has been published in Government Gazette 36401 for comment.
The Draft Electoral Amendment Bill intends extending the Electoral Act’s scope on special votes to include South African citizens living and working in foreign jurisdictions.
Home Affairs to Issue Instant Unabridged Birth Certificates

The department of home affairs has announced that from 4 March 2013 only unabridged birth certificates will be issued for newborn babies.
This decision comes from the department’s review of the Birth and Death Act (1992) as well as the Citizenship Act (1995) which culminated in the South African Citizenship Amendment Act 2010.
New Citizenship Laws Now in Effect

The South African Citizenship Amendment Act of 2010 came into effect on 1 January this year.
This was revealed in a proclamation published in Government Gazette 36054.
