National Health Insurance on Track

Department of Health

The National Health Insurance (NHI) is still a top priority for the health department.

The department of health’s aim of having a functional NHI Fund by 2019/20 forms a big part of its medium-term targets.

This was announced during the department’s presentation of its Annual Performance Plan (APP) in parliament recently.

The department’s APP 2017/18 – 2019/20 is founded on government’s 2030 vision outlined in the National Development Plan 2030.

The department aims to have the draft NHI Bill gazetted for public comments during 2017/18 and a functional NHI fund with the ability to purchase services on behalf of the population from accredited and contracted providers during 2019/20.

Other strategic objectives that form part of the department’s medium-term targets include:

•    Traditional Health Practitioners Act gazetted for public comment – 2018/19;
•    Breast Cancer Policy and Guidelines reviewed – 2019/20;
•    National Health Commission established – 2019/20;
•    Policy framework developed and presented to the National Health Council – 2017/18;
•    National Policy for the management of nursing placement agencies implemented and monitored – 2019/20;
•    National Health Laboratory Service Amendment Act promulgated into law – 2019/20; and
•    National Public Health Institutes of South Africa (NAPHISA) Bill tabled for consideration to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee of Health.
