Draft Emergency Medical Services Regulations have been published in Government Gazette 40140 for comment.

The proposed regulations were drawn up in terms of the National Health Act.

HPCSA Provides Opportunity for Family Medicine Specialists

The Health Professions Council of South Africa has notified those wishing to register as a specialist in family medicine to apply to the registrar of the Council within six months of the date of publication of Notice 777 in Government Gazette 40110.

This is applicable to anyone who was, prior to 17 August 2007, registered as a medical practitioner in the category independent practice (family physician) or any person who, prior to 17 August 2007, was registered as a medical practitioner in the category public service (family physician).

Nursing Council Sets Down Revised Fees

The nursing council has published its latest increase in fees.

According to Notice 94 in Government Gazette 40102, the new amounts apply to the year 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017 and can be paid from 1 July 2016.

Mental Health Care Act in Force

The Mental Health Care Amendment Act which aims to improve service delivery in the area of involuntary health care users has come into effect.

The proclamation was published in Government Gazette 40107.

Adjustment to Single Exit Price for Medicines Proposed

The health department has published the proposed single exit price (SEP) for medicines in Notice 759 in Government Gazette 40093.

The SEP of medicines and scheduled substances will be adjusted to a maximum of 5.70% for the year 2017.

New Registration Fees for Dental Laboratories

The Regulations Relating to the Registration of Dental Laboratories and Related Matters have been amended.

This was announced by the health department in Notice 729 in Government Gazette 40077.

Undesirable Electoral Practices for Medical Schemes to be Declared

The Registrar of Medical Schemes has published its intention to declare certain electoral practices as irregular or undesirable in relation to the activities of medical schemes.

The Registrar, along with the Council for Medical Schemes, controls the activities of medical schemes and protects the interests of members of medical schemes.

Health Puts Life Expectancy Under the Spotlight

Composition of Allied Health Professions Committee Laid Down

The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) has set down how a committee on unprofessional conduct is to be constituted.

The committee would be required to launch an inquiry into unprofessional conduct within the allied health professions.

Levy for Medical Schemes Set Down

Department of Health

The health department has announced that the new levy for medical schemes for 2016 has not yet been determined.

This comes after the Council for Medical Schemes confirmed, in Notice 136 in Government Gazette 39885, that it has not yet received approval for the new levy proposed for 2016/2017.
