Undesirable Electoral Practices for Medical Schemes to be Declared

The Registrar of Medical Schemes has published its intention to declare certain electoral practices as irregular or undesirable in relation to the activities of medical schemes.

The Registrar, along with the Council for Medical Schemes, controls the activities of medical schemes and protects the interests of members of medical schemes.

Health Puts Life Expectancy Under the Spotlight

The health minister Aaron Motsoaledi has emphasised his department’s goal to meet government’s National Development Plan to have life expectancy of 70 years by 2030 and an AIDS-free generation of under 20’s.

The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) has set down how a committee on unprofessional conduct is to be constituted.

The committee would be required to launch an inquiry into unprofessional conduct within the allied health professions.

Levy for Medical Schemes Set Down

The health department has announced that the new levy for medical schemes for 2016 has not yet been determined.

This comes after the Council for Medical Schemes confirmed, in Notice 136 in Government Gazette 39885, that it has not yet received approval for the new levy proposed for 2016/2017.

Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health Seeks Member

The health department is calling for nominations of persons from the private health care sector to serve on its Ministerial Advisory Committee on Mental Health.

According to notice 258 in Government Gazette 39820, the Committee was established in terms of the Mental Health Care Act.

The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) has substituted an earlier notice calling for nominations for elected members of council.

Notice 24 in Government Gazette 39802 replaces Notice 3 in Government Gazette 39736 published in February 2016.

Fortification of Food Under the Microscope

The health department has published draft amended regulations in terms of the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act for comment.

The draft regulations were published in Notice 217 in Government Gazette 39776 and deal with the fortification of certain foodstuffs.

Allied Health Professions Council Seeks Members

Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa

The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) has published an invitation to nominate members of its council in Notice 3 in Government Gazette 39736.

Nominated persons must be registered in terms of the Allied Health Professions Act to be elected to serve on the Council.

R & D Tax Incentive Under Scrutiny

A task team set up by the science and technology minister, Naledi Pandor, is looking into the challenges faced by businesses in trying to access the research and development tax incentive.

National treasury revealed this during Budget 2016.

The task team is scheduled to wrap up its work in April 2016.

The development of the EMP is carried out in order to meet the legislative requirement of the National Environmental Management Act.
