Siphiwe Nyanda was born in Soweto on 22 May 1950. He matriculated from Orlando High School in 1969, attended the University of Zululand, and later obtained a BA degree specialising in Economics from Unisa. He worked briefly as a sports reporter, before he began his career in the ANC as an underground recruiting officer in 1974. He attended military courses in the German Democratic Republic, Moscow and South Africa and worked his way up to become the commander of border operations in Swaziland in 1986 and the chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1992. He was arrested in 1990 and spent a few months in jail.

From 1994 to 1997 he served as the Chief of Defence Force Staff, and in 1998 he became the Chief of the South African National Defence Force, a position he held until 2005. He , and received several military awards. General Nyanda was appointed as minister of communications after the 2009 elections, a post which he held for one and a half years.
