DAR 178 Rules Amended

Amendments of Rules (DAR 178) to the Customs and Excise Act were published in Government Gazette 42128 during December 2018.

The amendments, drawn up by the South African Revenue Service (SARS), come into force on 1 April 2019.

New rules for section 77H of the act are included focused on, inter alia, request for reasons for decisions, application for Commissioner to direct suspension of amounts payable to Commissioner, submission of appeals, application for extension of timeframe within which internal appeal must be submitted, incomplete appeals, time within which appeals must be decided, establishment and jurisdiction of appeal committees and powers and duties of appeal committees.

In Gazette 42131, SARS published an amendment of Schedule 1 of the Customs and Excise Act dealing with beet and cane sugar.

Meanwhile, national treasury, in Gazette 42139, published the rate of interest on government loans.

The rate stands at 10.25% per annum as from 1 January 2019.

In a raft of notices in Gazette 42140, SARS published amendments to Schedules 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Customs and Excise Act dealing with unfortified wine, cheese, steel panels with an inner core of cement, sunflower seeds and motor vehicles.
