The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) has invited comment on its intention to recognise various professional bodies and designated qualifications for the national qualifications framework (NQF).
The invitation appears in notices 32 to 41 of Government Gazette 34950 dated 20 January 2012.
Notice 35 announces SAQA’s intention to recognise the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPSA) as a professional body and to register the designations of medical practitioner, dental practitioner, dental therapist and psychologist on the national qualifications framework (NQF).
SAQA has also announced its intention to recognise the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa and to register its designations on the NQF:
Inter alia, the health professions concerned include:
• homeopathy;
• acupuncture;
• chiropractic;
• reflexology; and
• osteopathy.
Notice 33 invites comment on SAQA’s intention to recognise the Engineering Council of South Africa and to register the following designations on the NQF:
• professional engineer;
• professional engineering technologist;
• professional certified engineer;
• professional engineering technician;
• registered lift inspector;
• registered lifting machinery inspector; and
• medical equipment maintainer.
Published in notice 34 is SAQA’s intention to recognise the Federal Bar Council of Advocates of South Africa and its designation of practicing advocate.
Notice 40 invites comment on SAQA’s intention to recognise the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and its designation of chartered accountant.
Notices 37 to 39 pertain to the following professional bodies and related designations:
• the Institute of Risk Management of South Africa;
• the South African Board for People Practices; and
• the South African Chefs Association.
Notice 41 pertains to the South African Institute for Physics.
The invitations are published in terms of National Qualifications Act 67 of 2008, with the deadline for comment set at 20 February 2012.
