Economic Stimulus Package on Track

The Presidency

The envisaged economic stimulus package will consist of economic reforms covering issues such as mining, telecommunications, tourism and transport.

The presidency confirmed this in a statement issued following a meeting with business and labour leaders last week.

Details of the stimulus package will be released soon.

The meeting served as a preparatory dialogue ahead of the upcoming Jobs Summit and Investment Conference.

During the meeting, President Ramaphosa indicated that the “stimulus package will reprioritise government spending, within the existing fiscal framework, towards activities that will stimulate economic activity.”

At the meeting, government, business and labour agreed that “South Africa’s economic recovery demands urgent implementation of the stimulus package and promised growth-enhancing reforms.”

Government was also urged to speed up finalization of the Mining Charter, spectrum policy and other “instances of regulation that hold the potential to make the economy more efficient, agile and competitive.”
