Department of Transport
The transport department has published a new air travel passenger safety charge in the Government Gazette.
The new charge is contained in the civil aviation authority (CAA) passenger safety charge regulations.
The regulations are published in terms of the Civil Aviation Act of 2009.
The transport department first introduced the passenger safety charge in 2001.
At the time, the CAA explained that the charge was necessary to fund its work that could not be directly attributable to a particular user.
The charge is paid by airlines to the CAA on a monthly basis. It applies to both local and international flights.
As part of the data verification procedure, statistics on passenger numbers for each airline will be provided to the CAA by the Airports Company Limited of South Africa or by the owners of airfields that fall outside the control of the Airports Company.
The charge is included in the price of a ticket paid by passengers.
The charge at the beginning of last year was R12.
It now stands at R16 per passenger.
The new charge comes into effect on 1 March 2012.
