Davies Endorses ITAC Recommendation on Sugar Duties

The trade and industry minister, Rob Davies, has endorsed the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) recommendation to increase import duties on sugar to US$680/ton.

According to a trade and industry department statement, the South African Sugar Association (SASA) launched an application to ITAC in February 2018 to increase the dollar based duty for sugar from US$566/ton to US$856/ton.

Renewal of Policy Directive on Scrap Metal Under Consideration

A renewal of the policy directive on the exportation of ferrous and non-ferrous waste and scrap metal is under consideration.

The policy directive limiting the export of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal came into force in 2013.

Parliament Briefed on Tripartite Free Trade Area Agreement

The select committee on trade and international relations was recently briefed on the ratification of the Tripartite Free Trade Area (TFTA) Agreement.

The TFTA Agreement involving the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community was signed by South Africa in 2017.
