Regulations on SAPS Ranks Amended

Department of Police

Regulations listing the ranks within the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been amended.

Amendments to the South African Police Service Act regulations were published in Government Gazette 40008.

Major and Lieutenant have been removed from the previous list of ranks in the SAPS.

Another change is that reference to national orders or instructions has been removed from regulation 8(3) dealing with the form of address in respect of members to be determined by the national commissioner.

The amended regulations also now stipulate that any reference in any law to a commissioned officer shall be interpreted to include a reference to a member holding the rank of Captain or a higher rank.

Similarly, any reference in any law to a non-commissioned officer shall be interpreted to include a reference to a member holding the rank of Warrant Officer or Sergeant.

The amendments also contain detail on distinctive badges, buttons, badges of rank, gorget patches and cap peaks.

The amendments come into force on 1 June 2016.
