Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans
The defence and military veterans minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, has published a notice in the Government Gazette calling for further nominations for commissioners to serve on the defence force service commission.
The invitation is published in terms of the Defence Amendment Act of 2010.
The act came into effect on 15 April 2011.
It calls for the establishment of a permanent defence force service commission tasked with advising the defence minister on improving conditions of service for South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members.
Last year, the defence minister indicated that conditions of service referred to the relationship between the state and SANDF members.
The act stipulates how the commission is to be constituted.
According to the notice, the commission must also:
• Advise the minister on policies in respect of conditions of service
• Put standards in place to ensure effective implementation of policies
• Carry out its duties in an impartial manner
Commissioners are to be appointed for a five year term. They will serve in either a full-time or part-time capacity.
The notice also lays down the criteria for appointment as a commissioner.
Some of the criteria include:
• Relevant experience and knowledge
• A public track record on defence force matters
• High integrity and credibility
• Appropriate qualifications-emphasis on analytical capabilities
• Not a serving member of the SANDF
• South African citizen
All nominations are to be accompanied by a written acceptance by the nominee.
Nomination forms are available at www.dod.mil.za.
Nominations close on 17 February 2012.
