Firearms Control Bill on Track

The Draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill is likely to be tabled in parliament in May 2015.

The national assembly’s police committee chairperson, Francois Beukman, revealed this in a statement released prior to the holding of a National Firearms Summit in parliament this week.

Justice Committee Concludes Hearings on Sexual Offences Bill

The justice and correctional services committee has stressed that the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act Amendment Bill does not intend lowering the age of consent for sexual activity.

The committee made this known following public hearings on the bill last week described in a statement as “fruitful and insightful”.

Forensic DNA Regulations in Place

Department of Police

Regulations outlining how the South African Police Service (SAPS) will be allowed to take DNA samples from suspects have been published in Government Gazette 38561.

The Forensic DNA Regulations were published for comment in October 2010.
