Communications minister Dina Pule has clarified the status of the Draft Electronic Communications Amendment Bill, the development of a policy on cyber security, and amendments to the policy on digital migration.
She did so at a recent media briefing.
The revised draft Electronic Communications Amendment Bill will be released for public comment during the first quarter of 2012.
According to the minister, it will be informed by the national development plan released last year by the national planning commission, which made “certain recommendations regarding policy and planning priorities” for information and communication technology (ICT).
Its impending release follows “proper consultation within government and (with) all relevant stakeholders”.
“Significant progress” has been made in developing a national cyber security policy framework, which will be presented to cabinet “by March 2012”.
Minister Pule said that her department had worked closely on this project with departments in the justice and crime prevention cluster.
Amendments to the 2008 broadcasting digital migration policy have been finalised and will be gazetted “next month”.
They are expected to “fast-track the finalisation of digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) regulations” currently being developed by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
