Department of Communications
The deadline for comment on the qualifying criteria for television set-top box subsidies has been extended.
According to the department of communications, the Universal Services and Access Agency (USAASA), which has to develop the criteria, has decided to extend the comment period from 30 November this year to 28 February next year.
Clarity has been provided on the role of the Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) in providing policy advice to the communications and telecommunications and postal services ministers.
In a proclamation published in Government Gazette 38280, the responsibilities of ICASA with respect to the two ministers in relation to relevant pieces of legislation has been outlined.
The communications department was split in two earlier this year with the creation of the telecommunications and postal services ministry.
Independent Communications Authority
The Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) has published a draft revision of the regulations for the radio frequency spectrum.
According to a notice in the Government Gazette (38301 / 1108 of 8 December 2014), the proposed revision of the 2011 regulations incorporates improvements as well as adaptations for future technological advancements. The proposals stem from a review ICASA undertook in 2013 to determine the effectiveness of regulations.
