Fishing Rights Allocation Process Under the Spotlight

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister, Senzeni Zokwana, is still re-considering the appeals received from Category B and Category C Appellants in the Hake Inshore Trawl fishing sector in compliance with a court order.

In a briefing to parliament on the Fishing Rights Allocation Process (FRAP), the department confirmed that the process is at an advanced stage and should be finalised by the end of November 2018.

2018/19 West Coast Rock Lobster TAC Announced

The 2018/19 West Coast Rock Lobster (WCRL) Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and Recreational Fishing Season has been announced.

In a statement, the agriculture, forestry and fisheries department declared that a TAC of 1084 tons has been determined for the 2018/19 fishing season as compared to 1924.08 tons last year.

Parliament Passes Plant Improvement and Plant Breeders’ Rights Bills

Parliament has passed two key pieces of proposed legislation on plants and sent the two bills to president Ramaphosa for assent.

The Plant Improvement Bill and the Plant Breeders’ Rights Bill were tabled in parliament in March 2015.
