South Africa Gets First Plant Health Policy

The department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries has officially published its plant health (phytosanitary) policy.

The guidelines were made public in the Government Gazette of 17 October 2014 (38102 / 889).

Fish Stocks on the Up

Agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister Senzeni Zokwana says in the last two years the status of nine fish stocks in South African waters have improved and that of three deteriorated slightly.

In reply to a question in parliament the minister says the figures of deep-water hake, anchovy, hottentot, sea bream, carpenter, slinger, line-caught yellowtail, Indian Ocean swordfish and both Atlantic and Indian Ocean albacore  have increased.  In contrast there are less yellow fin and big eye tuna and the status of squid has also weakened somewhat.

Agricultural Training Institutes Policy Released for Comment

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries department has made its policy proposals for agricultural training institutes public.

The green paper on the National Agricultural Training Institutes Bill has been published for comment in the Government Gazette (38081 / 880 of 13 October 2014).
