Parliament Passes Electoral Laws Amendment Bill

Parliament has passed the Electoral Laws Amendment Bill and sent it to president Ramaphosa for assent.

The bill, designed to enhance the existing legislative mechanisms that ensure free and fair elections, was tabled in parliament in October 2018.

Public Service Commission Bill Returned to NA

Parliament

The Public Service Commission Amendment Bill has been passed by the national council of provinces and returned to the national assembly for concurrence.

The proposed legislation seeks to ensure efficiency and certainty with regard to the process to renew the term of office of a member of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

NCOP Adopts Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill

Parliament

A bill designed to make provision for the recognition of Khoi-San communities has been passed by the national council of provinces and returned to the national assembly for concurrence.

The Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill was tabled in 2015.

ITAC Invites Rebate Permit Applications on Used Overcoats

Department of Trade and Industry

New importers of used overcoats and other clothes items have been invited to submit rebate permit applications to the International Trade Administration Commission.

The trade and industry department published the invitation in Government Gazette 42146.

Nugent Commission of Inquiry Draws Up Final Report

The Presidency

During December, the Nugent Commission of Inquiry into the South African Revenue Service (SARS) handed its final report to president Ramaphosa.

The Commission’s interim report was drawn up in October 2018.

Legal Practice Council to Amend Code of Conduct

The Draft Amended Code of Conduct for Legal Practitioners has been published in Government Gazette 42127 for comment.

The draft code was drawn up by the Legal Practice Council.

ITAC Receives Application for Rebate on Aluminium Bars

Department of Trade and Industry

The International Trade Administration Commission has received an application to set up a rebate facility on customs duty pertaining to bars and rods of aluminium-copper-magnesium-zinc alloys.

The trade and industry department called for written representations on the application in Government Gazette 42100.
