Parliament Seeks Comment on Qualifications Framework Bill

Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training

The portfolio committee on higher education and training has called for comment on the National Qualifications Framework Amendment Bill.

The bill was tabled in parliament in June 2018.

SARB Amendment Bill Tabled


The South African Reserve Bank Amendment Bill has been tabled in parliament.

The proposed legislation, a private member’s bill drawn up by the Economic Freedom Fighter’s Julius Malema, was published for comment at the end of May 2018.

DRDLR Denies List of Farms Drawn Up

Department of Rural Development and Land Reform

The rural development and land reform department has declared that no list of farms earmarked for expropriation without compensation has been compiled.

In a statement, the department added that the parliamentary process involving the Constitutional Review Committee remains a work in progress.

Media Guidelines for State Capture Inquiry in Place

Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

Guidelines on media coverage for the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture have been released.

The justice and constitutional development department published the Guidelines on the Media Coverage of Proceedings of the Commission in Government Gazette 41841.

Davies Endorses ITAC Recommendation on Sugar Duties

The trade and industry minister, Rob Davies, has endorsed the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) recommendation to increase import duties on sugar to US$680/ton.

According to a trade and industry department statement, the South African Sugar Association (SASA) launched an application to ITAC in February 2018 to increase the dollar based duty for sugar from US$566/ton to US$856/ton.

Renewal of Policy Directive on Scrap Metal Under Consideration

Department of Economic Development

A renewal of the policy directive on the exportation of ferrous and non-ferrous waste and scrap metal is under consideration.

The policy directive limiting the export of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal came into force in 2013.

Parliament Welcomes ConCourt Order on NPA


Parliament has announced that it is committed to “drive the requisite amendments to the National Prosecuting Authority Act to ensure that it is fully aligned to the Constitution of the country.”

In a statement, parliament welcomed the recent Constitutional Court order on the National Prosecuting Authority as strengthening constitutional democracy.
